Introducing Nucleo for Mac

Nucleo for Mac

Exactly 1 year ago we launched Nucleo with an ambitious goal: we wanted to create the smartest set of icons. But how do you make icons smart? They're just simple, micro units, whose properties are design related. We came to realize that making this visual language smart was not only about the icons, but mostly about the tools used to work with them. Put it in a simpler way, the goal wasn't to make the icons smart, but to improve the process of working with them. Hence the Nucleo web app, a tool with powerful export and customization features, built for developers and designers.

Today we're thrilled to introduce a new, powerful tool: the Nucleo Mac app. While the web app takes advantage of web technologies, the Mac app includes native-only features, like the possibility to drag & drop icons from the app to your favourite graphic application.

Drag & drop is the new black

Nucleo for Mac is a simple, yet powerful application to search, customize and include icons into your design process in no time. The app stores all icons locally, that's why it's super fast! And what about the customization features that set us apart from the competition? They are all there to play with!

The Mac app does not replace the web app. They serve two different, complementary scopes. Enjoy them both :)

    Love it – thanks guys!

Thanks Brandon! Any feedback is welcome :)

      • Brandon

So far so good. Would be nice to be able to able to drop in a hex code to the color picker but I know that’s a OS limitation.

        • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

          Have you tried Skala color?
          https://bjango.com/mac/skalacolor/

It’s a great app, integrated in your native color picker. Way better than the standard Mac one ;)

          • Brandon

            Awesome, that did the trick!

          • Brandon

Looks like colors picked with Skala do not accurately carry over into sketch. Default color picker is accurate so not sure what the problem is there.

          • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

I see, it’s a weird behaviour. We’ll look into this. The best solution (and we’re working on that) will be to build our custom color picker

          • Brandon

The only thing that reliably has worked so far is to use the “web safe colors” palette https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3af3e92bf03eaf111a64d4a243c31869c56f97d54379d4b3e5f2c4b4424c8445.jpg tab. Not ideal but it does the trick.

            Nice find – thank you!

Can’t get it to work with Keynote? “This image is in a format not supported”?

    • http://mansjonasson.se Måns Jonasson

Hm. It would appear that the application insists on exporting as SVG, even when PDF is selected in the preferences.

      • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

Right, the SVG to PDF switcher doesn’t seem to be working. Noted, we’ll send out a fix soon. Thanks for the heads up!

        • http://mansjonasson.se Måns Jonasson

Also, since I liked the app so much (even though I can’t use it yet ;) I went ahead and clicked “unlock app” and purchased lifetime membership. However, I can’t seem to unlock the app. Every time I click the link I’m asked on your web site to log in, and when I do it says “You are already logged in”.

          • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

We’ll look into this, sorry for the inconvenience! To unlock the icons, you can go to the account page:

            https://nucleoapp.com/account/

And activate the app from there

          • http://mansjonasson.se Måns Jonasson

Ah great, that worked. Thanks! Just get that PDF exporting working now, so I can use the icons in Keynote! :)

          • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

            Absolutely! Thanks and welcome aboard!

Cant able to drag to Photoshop getting the error message (could not place “icon-name” because no parser or file format can open the file)

    • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

hey Mohammed! Which Photoshop version are you running?

      • Mohammed Hussain

Sebasiano, I am using CC 2015. Attached screenshot for your reference

        • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

We’re working on a fix right now. Once we release the new version of the app, make sure to switch the export option from SVG to PDF (Nucleo > Preferences… > select PDF). That will let you import icons in PS. I have the latest version of PS CC 2015, and it allows me to import SVG icons

          • Mohammed Hussain

I have already changed the export option and it doenst exporting the icons to PS, I can able to export to Illustrator. Hope next update will solve this.

          • Mohammed Hussain

            Thank you:)

          • Mohammed Hussain

This problem has been solved in new update. Thanks for the great work Sebastiano:)

It would be great if there is similar option in web like to create a project, favorite, download a bunch of selected icons:)

  • Henning Fischer

Awesome! Btw. are there plans for a second iconset in future? Anyway thanks a lot for Nucleo it changed the way how I work with icons :)

    • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

We’ll keep adding new icons indeed ;)

  • mozainuddin

  • http://nitnat.de/ nitnat

    What about Windows?

  • http://codyhouse.co/ Sebastiano Guerriero

@n1tn4t:disqus @tamaskertesz:disqus We’re not working on a Windows version of the app at the moment, but def something to keep in mind for the future!

  • Mohammed Hussain

@seguerriero:disqus May I know when you are going to release next update?

    • http://codyhouse.co Claudia Romano

Hey Mohammed! The update has been already released. Just open the app and select Nucleo > Check for updates (Since we updated the activation process as well, you may have to activate the app a second time)

      • Mohammed Hussain

Hey it works great! Love it. Thanks:)

  • Robert

Why the interface is so unnative? Weird controls, that violet, other colors and typography…
